Welcome to Year 6

Our Year in Action

Spring Term

The children have all settled back in well after the Christmas holidays and are working hard to prepare for their SATs after Easter.

In English, we have started reading the story ‘Holes’ by Louis Sacha which the children are really enjoying. We have written police and newspaper reports about some of the major events in the story.

In Maths this term we have been working on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and have recently moved on to the topic of Ratio. The children are working extremely hard to grasp these difficult concepts.

In Science, we have been looking at Evolution and inheritance. The children particularly enjoyed disguising paper butterflies around the classroom as part of a lesson on adaptation.

In R.E we have been looking at the Mass, the significance of sacraments and exploring our understanding of the Eucharist.  We are starting to prepare for Easter by thinking of Jesus’ sacrifice, making our own Lenten promises and taking part in fund-raising activities.

In Topic this term children have been looking at Leeds and the local area. They have examined how Leeds grew from a small community over time to the thriving city that is today. They have also learned about significant figures from Leeds past such as Louis Le Prince – inventor of one of the first motion picture cameras.

In Music this term, the children have continued to learn and play the Melodica. They are making great progress in the understanding of musical terms such as tempo and crescendo.
