Welcome to Year 4

Our Year in Action

Autumn Term

We have all settled in well to Year 4. We have started off with starting our learning in all subject areas.

In History and Geography, we have been learning all about Invaders and Raiders and Anglo Saxons. We looked to see where they came from and where in the United Kingdom they invaded. We took a trip to the Royal Armouries to help with our learning and understand on Anglo Saxons- where the children all got to act like and Anglo Saxon at war. All children had a great day out.

In R.E we started to look at the Bible and how this is split into two- Old Testament and New Testament. Children had great fun retelling and acting out the story of David and Goliath.

We had great fun wearing our own Christmas jumper for a special Christmas lunch. We got to play pass the parcel alongside playing games, we all had a great time!

As part of our Art and D.T project, the children all designed and sowed their own Christmas tree decoration. They all turned out great!

We have had a very long term, but we have all had great fun!

Spring Term

The children have all settled back into school very calmly. In English, we have been reading a mythical book all about Spiderwick. Children have enjoyed reading this fantasy story all about boggarts and finding out about them. We made animations on Purplemash to show how our monster appeared when the characters Jared, Simon and Mallory went for a walk into the forest.

In Maths this term we have been working on multiplication and division. We have been looking at multiplying two- and three-digit numbers by a 1 digit. The children have all grasped this concept very well and now all enjoy their timetables.

In Science, we have been looking at different States of Matter and how they work. We have linked them to our daily life. We have carried out some experiments- how much gas is in each liquid and we made our very own water cycle and how to reverse a state of matter from a solid to a liquid to a solid.

In R.E we have been looking at how our Parish Church and the symbols and actions in mass link to the Last Supper. We are starting to prepare for our Easter Liturgy which all children are all looking forward to perform.

In Topic this term children have been looking at Ancient Egypt. We looked at a map to find Ancient Egypt and looked at symbols to help us find Egypt and places of interest.

In Music this term, we have been looking at ostinato’s and how we can identify these in music. Children made their own ostinato and performed to the class. Some children have participated in a skipping festival.

Some children came home with gold, silver and bronze certificates. All children got a participate certificate, they are really enjoyed it.

In Art and DT, we have been focusing our 3-D sculptures. We have created out own out of soap and leaves and sticks.

Year 4 took part of a road safety programme. All children got to experience crossing a busy road correctly to help keep them safe with adult supervision.

What a busy, fun term we have had!

Summer Term

Maths

In Maths this term we have been looking at fractions and decimals. We have worked very hard to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa.

English

We have been reading a science fiction book called ‘The Iron Man.’ Children have great enjoyment in reading this and finding out that Iron Man had a battle with the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon and he WON!! All children wished they could have been like Iron Man, made from metal and ate like him.

Science

We have been looking Sound and how we as humans can hear it. We found out that sound travels through waves and vibrations from the source to our ear. We had great fun making our own string telephone and investigate whether sound can actually travel through vibrations.

R.E

We have been focusing on what life would be like as an Early Christian, linking to the disciples on how they felt before and after Easter and Pentecost. We also had our Year 4 mass, where Father G kindly came to school for.

Topic

This term children have been looking at The Rainforest. We looked researched the different layers and found what animals live in each.

Music

This term we have been learning about how we can use our body to create a percussion melody. Children had great fun creating their own melody, through body percussion, for an animal which lives in the Rainforest deciding what pitch, tempo or dynamic it would sound like.

Art

We have been focusing our on Topic the Rainforest. We have researched each week what animals live there and we have sketched these for our classroom display. We have some beautiful drawings of animals.
