Welcome to Year 3

Our Year in Action

Spring 1

During spring term, we have started to learn about the Romans in Britain, creating fantastic versions of the story Escape from Pompeii. The children wrote and illustrated using fantastic descriptions! They used the knowledge of volcanoes they had from our geography topic to paint vivid scenes with their writing.

In R.E we looked at some of the parables Jesus told us to help us live in a positive way. We used drama to show Jesus setting us an example at his baptism.

In maths we have turned our focus to Fractions, looking at unit and non-unit. Adding and taking away fractions and even finding fractions of an amount.

In science the children have looked in depth at forces and magnets, experimenting with magnets and exploring them through observations and practical sessions.

In Art we have created fantastic abstract sculptures made from cardboard. The children were given the challenge of making the sculptures entirely without glue! Some managed where as others may have needed help but everyone enjoyed this topic greatly.

Within our music sessions we have worked with Miss Leather on tempo, singing quickly and slowly and learning to use do, re and mi.

In PE we created dances in teams and performed them following our learning themes of Inspire, Create, Perform.

Spring 2

During the second half of the spring term, we continued to learn about the Romans in Britain, developing our own versions of the story Escape from Pompeii. We celebrated our love of reading on World Book Day and also read Spud Murphy as our guided reading text.

In R.E we focused on the theme of Reconciliation. We reflected on our relationships with God, as well as our relationships with others and how we repair these relationships when we have made wrong choices. We also worked hard to produce a depiction of the events of Holy Week, through dance, music and drama.

In maths we continued to focus on Fractions, as well as moving on to Measurement and Statistics. We continued to have a focus on learning our times tables as these are crucial to many areas in maths.

In science the children continued to look in depth at forces and magnets, experimenting with magnets and exploring them through observations and practical sessions.

Within our music sessions we have worked with Miss Leather on tempo, singing quickly and slowly and learning to use do, re and mi.

In PE we further applied and developed a further range of skills following our learning themes of react, roll, retrieve. We also had the opportunity for some cricket coaching with a specialist.

Summer 1

In year 3 this term we have been focusing on Easter and Pentecost, looking at the Holy Spirit and creating art work around the Ascension.

In English we have started our new book “The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark” We are building up to write our own chapter for the book and focusing on writing speech.

In maths we have looked at time and shape. Both can be very tricky but the year 3s have shown that they can be resilient with their learning to understand harder concepts.

In our topic work we have left the Romans behind and moved on to the Anglo-Saxons, focusing on how life in Britain changed when they invaded. We have also used this topic to help us with a D.T project. Making Anglo-Saxon boats from materials that float.

For our art topic we have moved on to light and dark in regards to painting, using tints and shades to make artwork appear to be 3D.

Within science we took an in depth look at light and shadows. To understand what light is and how it reacts with different objects.

We have also been on a school trip this term! The second-year students at Leeds Beckett university invited us for a raising aspirations day. The focus being on showing our pupils what it is like to go to university and that with hard work they can achieve this goal.

Our P.E topic has seen us looking at our gymnastic skills, how we can jump and land safely from different pieces of equipment as well as practicing various events for our upcoming sports day.
